OUR PEOPLE

Meet our microbiome
research team.

Our research connects people and expertise across agricultural, environmental and health microbiology.

Nejc Stopnišek

GROUP LEAD

Nejc Stopnišek, Ph.D.

Microbial ecologist · Department head

Nejc leads the Department of Agricultural Ecology and Natural Resources at the Agricultural Institute of Slovenia (KIS) and is a Senior Scientist at the National Laboratory of Health, Environment and Food (NLZOH).

His research focuses on plant–microbe interactions, soil microbiomes and the ecological and evolutionary processes that shape microbial communities. He combines field research, microbial cultivation and bioinformatics to connect patterns with mechanisms.

His research experience includes the Netherlands Institute of Ecology (NIOO-KNAW), Michigan State University and the University of Washington.

Nejc is the driving force behind the Slovenian Microbiome Network, through which he organises international symposia on microbiome research, connecting researchers across disciplines and countries.
